Car battery died- format SD card message - won't format - reset

My car battery died and sat for a week. Upon return, the camera said "card error - format SD card". When I do that, it stays on the "formatting" screen for 10-15 minutes. When the view screen comes back on, the error message pops up again within a few minutes. I don't think it's really formatting. I read to reset factory settings to the camera and that may clear it up so I tried that and it's still happening. I tried to download the firmware update but my PC didn't know what program to use for a .bin file and I accidentally hit Adobe so now it downloads the file only in Adobe which can't read it and I don't know what program will read it but every time I try to download it does it in Adobe so it's a vicious cycle from which it seems I can't escape!!! HELP!!
